Diana Lake is known not only for its exemplary scenery, but for its expanses of open meadows, making it an attractive habitat for grizzlies. This is a hike best done in groups. Head upstream for a short distance before crossing Pinnacle Creek on a footbridge. From here the trail follows an old road for about 1 km before it enters the forest on the right. The trail crosses several avalanche paths and gains about 400 m elevation in 4 km. Here the creek and path switch directions, heading northwest through sparse subalpine forests. You'll have good views of The Judge to the north. Between the creek crossings at 4.5 and 5.5 km enjoy the flatter terrain and large open meadows. There’s lots of evidence of bears digging for roots in the meadows. You’ll appreciate the strength of these foraging bruins, in some spots, it looks as if a tractor came through with a plough. Stay to the trail and use the boardwalks provided to avoid damaging the fragile alpine terrain. Shortly after crossing another small stream, you will find the lake nestled below Mount Norman’s steep slopes. If you are looking to extend your hike, there are a lot of options. You can scramble up the west ridge of The Judge for views of Mt. Assiniboine, the Goodsirs, the Bugaboos and the Kootenay River Valley. Diana Lake Lodge is located about 200m from the campsites and is a private backcountry facility. Please respect their privacy.
Set your odometer to zero at the traffic lights on Highway 93/95 at the Invermere junction. Head north to Radium for 13 km on Hwy 93/95. From the 4 way stop in Radium, continue on Highway 95 towards Golden. At 31 km turn right at the sign for Luxor corrals onto Kindersley Forest Service Road. At 36 km watch for an aqueduct on the right – one of the oldest working aqueducts in western Canada. At 37.5 km take the left fork at the Y-junction and then at 39 km take the left fork again. At 45 km turn right at the Y-junction. The road ends at 54 km with a pull out area for the trailhead. Part of the road and the old parking lot has been washed away. Please park carefully so you do not block access for anyone else.
Variable outdoor terrain
Early summer to late fall.
Diana Lake Lodge is located a short distance from the lake. Please respect the guest's privacy and stay clear of the area by staying on the trail that hugs the lakeshore. Avoid the trail that heads off from the outhouse as it goes directly to the Lodge.
Really spectacular spot.
